DM Weil Gallery Ranked #1 Attraction By TripAdvisor.Com

As beautiful as the majestic mountains of upstate New York may be, travelers appear to be finding the intensely colorful paintings of a New Paltz artist DM Weil even more alluring. According to TripAdvisor.Com, the number one attraction in New Paltz, New York is neither the Mohonk Preserve nor Minnewaska State Park, but the art gallery of painter DM Weil.

The irony of the situation is not lost on DM Weil, the contemporary abstract painter who recently erected a 3,000 square foot gallery on her own upstate property as a showcase for her work. "We opened the gallery in May 2011, and within two months visitors started telling us they had found us listed on TripAdvisor.com as the number one thing to do here in New Paltz," she says. "Evidently, people enjoyed their experience at the gallery so much they felt compelled to share it with others on the Trip Advisor site. I am so greatful to be able to share my love of art with the public."

DM Weil explains that visitors are impressed not only by finding a Soho style art gallery in the woods on a country road, but by having the artist herself available to answer questions as they browse the paintings. "Our goal is to offer a total art experience you can't get anywhere else, combining a fabulous gallery environment with the opportunity to learn how each work is created. And we offer all of our guests wine, cappuccino and local baked goods, something not found in even the most exclusive galleries of New York City," states gallery manager Ken Aspin.

"DM planned out every inch of this space using the same eye that makes her an amazing painter, from the 14-foot ceilings and the media wall to the 1911 restored Grotrian grand piano used for our mini-concerts," he says.

Being ranked the number one attraction in New Paltz is just the latest in a series of happy accidents that have accompanied DM Weil's decision to move her gallery from New York City to New Paltz. In fact, DM Weil Gallery was planned initially as a storage and workspace. "Only once the building was constructed did the vision for turning it into a proper gallery come to me," says DM Weil. "I had originally intended to rent a storefront in town, but nothing suitable was available. I was concerned that it might be difficult to lure people here, even though it's just a few minutes from the center of New Paltz. But we have had a relatively steady stream of visitors, both those who are just curious to see what's going on and those who are serious art collectors."

The gallery has already welcomed guests from all over the northeast, and from as far away as Italy. Mikey Teutul from the American Choppers reality show, and an artist in his own right, recently stopped by and purchased a DM Weil piece. Although the gallery has only been open for a short time, DM Weil's work is already a focal point in many nearby hotels, spas and offices.

"It's great that Trip Advisor has ranked us number one," says Mr. Aspin. "Anything that helps share DM Weil's work with more people is a good thing. Did I mention we give away free prints to first time visitors?"

DM Weil Bio

DM Weil was born in New York City and grew up in the Bronx. Her earliest memories are of sitting at the kitchen table drawing for hours. By the age of nine, DM had already won a number of local drawing and poster contests.

A turning point came in sixth grade, when DM was accepted to both art and music talent programs, but could only choose one. DM chose the music talent program, and started on a path that led all the way to becoming a published songwriter and member of BMI.

Through the years, DM Weil's artistic urges led to forays in photography and interior design. But the impulse to paint remained strong. By 2001, she could resist the urge to paint no more and built herself a studio in the mountains of New Paltz, NY. DM began a two year period of intense experimentation during which she discovered an affinity for acrylics, which allow her to paint layers upon layers quickly without the long drying times normally associated with oils. She found herself painting bold, brilliant images, mostly on large canvases. Finally, she began inviting friends and neighbors into the studio.

DM Weil was both surprised and gratified by the immediate acceptance of her work by most everyone who ventured into her studio. After selling five paintings in a month, she realized that it made sense for her to devote all of her available energy to painting.

Following in the tradition other successful self-taught artists, DM Weil's work captures the raw energy that flows from an artistic spirit unencumbered by the need to adhere to the rules of the art world. DM Weil's paintings explode with color. They are extremely dramatic, and invariably elicit a strong emotional response in the viewer. Many see her work as highly musical. While recalling the simplicity of childhood, DM Weil's paintings are imbued with a sense of form and symbolism that communicate with each viewer's unconscious in a unique way.

The fact that DM Weil's work touches so many people in so many ways has brought her a level of success that has enabled her to join the select group of artists who own their own galleries. In 2006 she opened Gallery 721 @ Sobro in New York City. Then in 2011 she created the DM Weil Gallery, one of the largest modern art galleries in the Hudson Valley, on her property in New Paltz.

DM Weil has had solo shows at the John Allen Gallery in midtown manhattan as well as the Reiss Gallery in Soho. In addition to having her paintings displayed in businesses and residences in both the U.S. and Canada, DM Weil's work has been featured in two recent issues of Gradient, New York's cutting edge magazine of art and culture. She has been interviewed on local television as well as in NY Living Magazine.

DM Weil has recently been featured on the front page of the New Paltz Times.

Her exhibits have been covered by Guest Of A Guest, NYC’s hottest social news and nightlife website. DM Weil believes in giving thanks for the privilege of spending her time creating art, and so donates a portion of the proceeds from each painting sold to Manger-Weil House, an Ethiopian orphanage that she and her husband and daughter helped to start.
